This is only a guide. Optimal feeding amounts may vary according to your pet’s temperament, activity level and environment. If you have any questions regarding your pet’s health, please contact your veterinarian.
We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.
The two dogs, a border collie and a golden, like it well enough but they will eat anything.
I bought this the 30lb bag in February for $85 plus tax. Less than 30 days later it's at $99 plus tax.
This is a 17% price increase. While inflation is high. It's not that high!
When I contacted the company seeking an explanation the response was, "The decision to increase our prices is never taken lightly, but it is necessary to continue to deliver a quality product for the pets that we serve. The rising costs of innovation, raw materials, packaging and transportation are reflected in the current price increase."
And with that absolutely unbelievable response they have lost my business.
In an environment where mountains of dogs are being euthanized daily because pet owners can no longer afford to keep them, I expect more of an American company - especially one that has profited so much and is one of the most profitable American companies.
3 stars for ingredients as I didn't like some of the ingredients - the second item is byproduct!
5 stars for the freshness - it looked fresh.
I didn't star for the flavor - my dogs didn't tell me and I wasn't gonna try it.
Overall 3 stars because of the company price increase.
As I write this review I realize I should have studied the ingredients more closely anyway. Perhaps the price hike was a favor in disguise.
Royal Canin is a great company. They have vet scientists on staff and they do feeding trials. These are the things people need to look for when searching for a new kibble.
When we switched from our old brand, which will remain nameless, we did it over two weeks. Our Aussies love the Royal Canin. They are both seniors - 7 and 13 years old - and we decided to feed the both the 7+. On their old kibble they had a few minor dry skin issues and our youngest Aussie had just been diagnosed with very minor kidney failure. Both girls are a healthy weight and exercise daily.
After being on the Royal Canin for six months we had blood work done on both girls and we were absolutely stunned at the results. Not only were our youngest Aussie's kidney results normal, but our oldest's liver function was better too. Both girls' coats have improved dramatically. Our vet was so impressed she asked what we were doing differently.
We were concerned about weight gain because we switched food during the winter when our girls still get exercise with indoor ball and some short outdoor walks, but not nearly as much running and walking as they get in the spring and fall during dog park season. Both girls maintained their weight.
I would highly recommend Royal Canin. We feed the wet food on lick mats and in frozen food toys and the dry kibble along with a probiotic twice daily.
Much healthier pet and she eat far less of this product then cheaper store dog food
It smells good to humans. Lol
Their digestive systems seem to love Royal Canin. They're very regular and their poos are relatively firm. That won't matter much to you if your dog lives outdoors and runs free on 15 acres of woodsy land, but we walk our dogs in a suburban neighborhood where we bag their poo, and it's important to be able to pick up what they produce. Royal Canin gets digested quite nicely in our dogs, so their poos are easy to pick up with a pet-poo baggie.
Also, she loves the Canin, woofs it right down. I like that there is not so much filler. That's what was causing the ridiculous volume.
Package is sealed, not expired. Smells fresh (ewww).
He loved it! The kibble is a little larger than some other brands, so he eats them one or two at a time. He ate the whole bowl, and my dog will sometimes leave his food and not eat for an entire day. He even licked his bowl when he finished. For the past two days, he has eaten on time and finished his food in the AM and PM.
I’m sold on this dog food! Maybe other dogs don’t have the same tastes as Ollie, but it’s worth a try if your dog is a picky eater.
My only complaint is that the last couple times, the large boxed bag has had box cutter holes in the bag which I believe degrades the freshness. Hoping his report will get back to the person(s) responsible for managing quality control.
This one she loves, and there is a huuuge difference in her stamina and health. She was lazy and getting fat. Now it takes me 2 hours in the park to tire her out and shes been in the best shape since we've had her.
A bit pricey, but worth every penny. It lasts as long as cheaper brands because she needs a lesser quantity.
Buy it.
This is the ONLY brand dog food I will feed my "pack" of 4 dogs. I purchase 3 different products from Puppy, to Medium, to Large and feed them separately. Two of my dogs were on "death row" at the animal shelter and their coats were so pathetic, they were sick. I had to hand feed them some wet Royal Canin to get them to even eat at first and then they've been on the product since January. Their coats are so shiny and smooth!! The transformation has been incredible. My male dog I've had from 8 weeks and his coat is so shiny and soft you'd literally think he's a stuffed animal. Cannot say enough positive things about this product. They eat less and have smaller and firmer stools - important when cleaning up after 4 big dogs!
My dad's little beagle-ish thing (Ollie) has been on a Purina product all his life, and did fine on it. However, we came for an extended visit and our dogs have food issues, so we had to put them all on the same thing, since they WILL eat out of any bowl they can get their snouts into. My border collie-ish thing (Lia) originally did fine on a Purina product as well, and never had any issues, but I got the Talking-To from the Dog People about slowly murdering my dog with it, so we tried Blue products. Those really did HURT her. The cattle dog-ish one (Charlie) just had soft stools, but Lia got weeping sores on her feet and ankles and didn't have a solid bowel movement for a month. We never thought of the food for the sores (panic attack over alleged ringworm instead), but took them both off. A while later, they both were a little constipated, and I still had some Blue around, so I threw it in the bowl. IMMEDIATELY Lia got sores on her feet and ankles again. No more Blue for us.
We then used Nutro products for quite some time. Lia was always fine on those, but Charlie had reflux issues. Since we hadn't had him very long at that time, we thought it was just his stomach and had him on vet acid reducers. We ended up switching to RC because the kennel we used at the time for VERY frequent travel feeds RC, and it was frankly easier just to switch them than to haul our food so they could be fed something different to prevent switching back and forth. As it turns out, little Charlie has FAR fewer stomach issues and no longer needs the medicine.
Ollie is an older guy with some arthritis and allergy issues. He seems to do better generally on the RC, and has more energy.
It's a large-ish size kibble for medium dogs in my opinion, but I'm assuming there's some reason for that - perhaps they need to actually crunch the kibble in order to help clean their teeth or some such thing.
The bag annoys me to no end. It's allegedly resealable. It is NOT, at least not without a great deal of time and trouble. If I'm paying $50 for a bag of dog food, you can put a decent zipper on the top. Basically, prospective buyers, you WILL need a bag clip for this, and a large one at that since the bag material is pretty inflexible.
Oh, and the bag its in is resealable! +++
