This is only a guide. Optimal feeding amounts may vary according to your dog’s temperament, activity level and environment. If you have any questions regarding your pet’s health, please contact your veterinarian.
We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.
I purchased a small bag to see if he would like it if it stopped him from throwing up his food and to make sure he didn't have any reaction.
Long story short, I have been buying this for him for several years. He likes the flavor and it stopped him from throwing up his food. The pieces are designed to prevent labs from inhaling their food and I can attest through experience that my lab has not thrown up his food since switching him over to this one. And a bonus, the delivery is quick and I don't have to carry a 30lb bag of food to my car.
Delivery was delayed as it came through USPS and was supposed to be here on a Friday and didn't arrive until Monday. The bag was also cut so not sure how long the vacuum sealed bag had been opened.
The food seems to be ok although now at the last 1/4 of bag and dogs don't seem so eager to eat it..
I will pick it up myself from now on to ensure I get it when I need it and that it's still sealed!
About a year ago, a very experienced and reputable (obsessed?) Labrador breeder / trainer told me that she only feeds her dogs Royal Canin Labrador. So, out of desperation, we tried it. Not only did he love it, his skin irritation got under control for months.
What’s kind of odd and ended up being an amazing “accidental” find is that, when his skin irritable begin flaring up again, we were low on dog food and I had tried to find anywhere with Royal Canin Labrador food nearby or with delivery and couldn’t. During a visit to a big-name pet supply chain store about 30 miles from home (was told they had it in store), one of their wonderful employees recommended that I try Royal Canin Golden Retriever “because they are both retriever breeds”. I bought it because I was running out of options, and am so glad I did. After feeding him Royal Canin Golden Retriever, his skin irritation went back down. Don’t know how or why, but it did. So now, we only feed our big beloved dog beast (with very expensive and high-maintenance allergies and skin issues) only Royal Canin Labrador, alternating between Labrador and Golden Retriever every now and again.
Since switching to Royal Canin over a year ago, he’s had more playful spunk. his fur has been softer with a beautiful sheen, and he’s definitely been a happier pup with significantly less itchy, painful allergy flare ups.
This is high-quality dog food by a company who clearly knows what they are doing to make dogs lives the best that they can be. It is worth every penny.
"My dog frood is awesome...giv more plz!!" -reviewer's dog
My dog asked me to provide a paws up review on Royal Canin. He said he looks forward to this moment and just can’t get enough of Royal Canin. He said he had more energy and generally just feels a more sense of peace and calmness about life.
It is great that it is sold on Amazon as well since it is usually the same price if not cheaper than in stores like Petsmart or Petco. In addition, my lab finishes a bag every month, so it is convenient that you can subscribe to it, so it is sent monthly.
I love this food. Designed to help labs eat more slowly, and has ingredients to help keep them healthy longer (like supplements for their joints). Remember to switch to new foods slowly over several weeks to avoid upset stomachs.
Finally I switched to RC, and noticed my dog had stopped licking her paws within about a week.
Before the switch, she would lick her paws untill they would bleed, and scratching her ears from the build-up of wax on a constant bases. Infection would set in, and off to the vet...again!
I used muzzles, e-collers, and would even bandage her paws to keep her from licking, and scratching.
Other than having to clean her ears just about every other day now, is a tremendous burden off my shoulders.
Great product!!!...Thanks!
Ordering it from Amazon has been great as well. It's delivered on time, and I save a lot versus buying it locally.
This product is definitely quality. So much so that our cats like to eat it! The large kibbles are supposed to slow labs down when eating; however, Buddy has learned to swallow them whole! I have to feed him by hand so that our other dog gets a chance to eat her food (she actually chews her food). The first week - gas was HORRIBLE with both the pups. After the first week, it was gone. I have not noticed any difference in their coat, but I definitely noticed that they have alot of energy! It is hard to compare physical traits because we've only owned Buddy for 3 weeks now, so we had no idea how he acted before we got this food.
One positive thing I have noticed with the Royal Canin is that our black lab/boxer mix no longer has bad breath! We were told the last time she went to the vet that she was getting some tarter. I knew we had to start brushing her teeth, but these big kibbles took care of the problem for us! (One less thing for us to do!)
With two dogs, we seem to be going through the 30 lb bag of food in less than a month. Buddy is 87 lbs, Lana is 75 lbs. We may try the Eukanuba (sp?) next and compare. I was extremely impressed how quickly Amazon got the food to us, and like others mentioned: it was nice not having to go to the store and buy their food! I ordered the food on Friday morning and it was delivered on Monday!
When we adopted a 14 month old lab several years ago to keep our older lab company, the youngster's coat was dull black and course. She instantly loved the taste of RC and had no issue transitioning from the premium dog food she had been raised on. Within 6 weeks her coat was soft and glowing.
We can't imagine feeding our Labradors any but Royal Canin. A number of friends and family have switched over to RC as a result of our (and our Labrador's) endorsement. And we love that it is now sold on Amazon - one click and it is on it's way. Just placed our order and decided to leave this review while I was here.
I need to wait now if it will do good for the coat and stomach since hes only been taking it for 2 months. So far is awesome!!
I love not having to lug giant bags of dog food from the store. I feel a bit sorry for the UPS man, but he's younger than me.
The vet put her on Royal Canin hypoallergenic so we could suss out exactly what it was that was making her tummy upset. We found out that she loved eating the Royal Canin and became "normal" again. But, at $75 for a 20lb bag, it was going to send my husband and I to the poorhouse. I researched and found the Royal Canin Labrador Retriever mix and decided to try it. This stuff is amazing. She LOVES it and actually eats her whole dinner and she's still "normal" in the poo department.
I'm so thrilled about this product. I think too that it's made her more spunky and, although she's only been on it for a few weeks, her black coat seems glossier.
A happy dog makes a happy owner!
Amazon seems to have the best price on this product as well. In the pets stores I've seen it go for $6-9 more. Plus, free delivery means no toting 30lb bags in and out of the car!
I've never written a review before, but you need to know this.
After several years of many visits to the vet for hot spots and skin problems, with the usual prescriptions for antibiotics and steroids, Royal Canin Labrador Retriever formula saved the day. To top it all off, he likes it and hasn't had any skin problems for the last 5 years.
I also love that the kibbles are large and hollow, forcing him to bite into it and chew rather than just guzzling down food- I am sure this helps his teeth and digestive system, now that he is forced to actually chew his food! It is on the high end price wise, but compared to the money I spend on food for my 2-legged children, it is nothing. One bag lasts him just under a month (he is about 80lbs), and with free shipping through prime, it is cheaper than driving to a pet store to buy it there. Will be re-ordering every month!
So Amazon....if you're reading this, please keep this item around forever, keep the cost as is......and contiue the free standard Prime Shipping!
ETA on 1/5/11: BE AWARE THAT THIS ITEM IS NOT BEING SHIPPED PRIME ANYMORE. TWO DAY SHIPPING HAS BEEN DROPPED AND FREE STANDARD (SUPER SAVER) SHIPPING WHICH TAKES ABOUT A WEEK IS HOW IT IS BEING SHIPPED DUE TO ITS WEIGHT. IT STILL HAS A PRIME LOGO ON IT SO BE CAREFUL AND PLAN YOUR ORDERS AHEAD OF TIME. I LEARNED OF THIS THE HARD WAY AND HAD TO PICK UP AN EXTRA BAG AT ALMOST $10 MORE WHILE WAITING FOR MY SHIPMENT. NOT THE END OF THE WORLD, JUST AN FYI :)
I've been feeding this to my oldest lab for 6 years and the youngest for almost 2 (puppy formula 1st year for both). They are both so healthy, perfect weight, shiny coats, clear eyes and good joints. My vet had recommended it so we did the research and found that because pet food is not regulated like our food (no pet FDA) a lot of companies can word things to sound like their food is good for your pet, not full of fillers and is nutritional. But listen carefully to those ads and how and what they tell you. Read the labels and research, even if you don't go with this brand. I have found this product to be great for my dogs and I am happy with what it is. They both get a scoop in the morning and night. They both weigh about 70 pounds.
It's also cheaper for me to buy it here than the store and I do not mind having it delivered to my door at all :)
