For adult dogs over 100 pounds, add approximately ⅓ cup for every 10 additional pounds. For pregnant or nursing adult dogs, we recommend free-choice feeding. Adjust amount offered daily as needed to maintain ideal body condition. This feeding guide provides a starting point for the amount of food to give your dog each day. We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow them to become overweight. The amount of food your dog needs can vary based on age, activity level or other food and treats given, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to determine an appropriate weight for your dog, and to make any necessary adjustments to their feeding.
Remember to keep plenty of fresh water available to your pet at all times.
When transitioning your pet to a new food, we recommend a gradual introduction of the new formula over a 7 day period. For pets with sensitivities, extend the transition period to 10 to 14 days. Start by adding a small amount of your pet’s new food to his or her current food. Gradually, increase the new food amount and decrease the current food amount at each feeding until you are feeding only the new food.

Well worth the money!
Any way the product is good and the price is right
If they put everything they say they do on the bag and it sure smells like they put all that stuff in there. I will be making this a regular purchase! Both of my pit bulls love it! And I feel better giving them something healthier
Thanks. T. Kerrville, TX

We put a wet topper on the kibble and haven't encountered any rejections.
It has pretty decent reviews and the price point is perfect for people on budgets or those with multiple dogs but who still want great quality.
The product is made in the USA. I have found that there are times in the year when the product is hard to find - especially, in the large (40 lb) bags. As such, I buy 2 x 40 lb. bags at a time to ride these lulls out.
Currently, a better value than Purina One (which had climbed up to $50 for a 40lb bag!)
Plastic bag keeps this dog food fresher, as well.
The food is also heavy, and very uniform. One bag of this lasted me about 2.5 weeks for 2 medium/large dogs. Great food!
I'm more then happy to give it to them.. this company goes out of their way to add so much beneficial ingredients that most have know idea why.. my puppies are 16 and 1 and the old man play so hard with the younger.. and i give that , to his food .. I bought way more expensive.. but my boys have never reacted they way do to this meal.. it's not just kibble..
He enjoys it as well as his hold food.
1. KIBBLE SIZE: The pieces of the beef kibble are bigger (but not too big) so they're great for larger dogs like mine. She likes the lamb/rice version just as well. Those pieces of kibble are much smaller, which is great if you have large and small dogs in the same household.
2. MINIMAL CRUNCHED UP SEDIMENT: There's some kibble "dust" whenever you purchase large bags of dry dog food, but I'm happy to report that compared to all of the other higher-end brands I've bought before the amount is very minimal.
3. SELL BY DATE IS REASONABLE: When I purchased other brands it was always a guess at how long I'd have before we hit the expiration date on the bag. After multiple orders I can attest to the fact that the sell-by date is many months out which means you're getting a fresher bag of kibble that will last you a bit longer.
I'm thrilled to have found this food for my 70-lb Lab Mix. Her "cousin," a 10-pound Chiweenie who visits weekly, likes it as well. (Okay, neither one of them is a particularly picky eater but at least it has their stamp of approval.) Figure in the freshness, the quality, and the cost savings, and this dog food's a winner!
The standout feature of Diamond Naturals Adult Real Meat Recipe is the use of high-quality, real pasture-raised lamb as the primary protein source. This ensures that my furry friend receives the essential amino acids and nutrients necessary for their overall well-being and muscle development.
The 40-pound bag is not only convenient for long-term use but also reflects the product's excellent value for money. The generous quantity ensures that I have a consistent supply of nutritious food for my dog, without compromising on quality.
The carefully selected ingredients are crafted into a balanced and complete formula, providing the right blend of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to support my dog's energy levels and maintain a healthy weight.
I greatly appreciate that this dry dog food is grain-inclusive, as it offers a well-rounded diet suitable for dogs with various dietary needs. The formula is free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, giving me peace of mind knowing that I am providing my dog with the best possible nutrition.
Furthermore, my dog adores the taste of Diamond Naturals Adult Real Meat Recipe. The delicious flavor of pasture-raised lamb entices them during mealtime, making it an enjoyable feeding experience for my furry companion.
Additionally, the kibble size is perfectly suited for my dog's mouth, allowing for easy consumption and promoting healthy chewing habits.
In conclusion, Diamond Naturals Adult Real Meat Recipe has become a staple in my dog's diet, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. The premium quality, real meat protein, and thoughtfully selected ingredients make it an exceptional choice for any dog owner seeking optimal nutrition for their furry friend. I wholeheartedly recommend Diamond Naturals Adult Real Meat Recipe for its unbeatable value, superior taste, and the health benefits it provides to your canine companion. Your dog deserves the best, and Diamond Naturals delivers exactly that!
Diamond Naturals beef flavor has grain sorghum as the second ingredient. This was the only brand I could find on Amazon that didn't have grain as the 4th or 5th ingredient, if it had any at all. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because my dog doesn't like it as well as other brands he's eaten before. He'll nose through his dog bowl looking for something better and then eventually, after coming to the realization nothing better is coming, he'll reluctantly eat it. To combat this I mix this flavor with another flavor he likes a little better that also has some grain. I'll also mix in some wet dog food from time to time, which he really likes.
I realize there are some dogs that have true grain allergies and need grain-free dog food, but for the most part it seems like a marketing ploy. I'll continue to buy this brand until more brands put canine health before sales numbers.
And it kept my Husky/Vizla+Weimaraner/Belgium Malanois absolutely gorgeous with a healthy, thick shiny coat of hair and we never any problems with his skin being itchy or flakey.
I Had him on this brand of dog food since he was a puppy.
Almost every morning I'd put a whole egg, (shell included) in his food bowl with some Diamond Naturals lamb and rice dry dog food, and He grew to be the most healthiest, most vibrant and most gorgeous dog I've ever known.
This is excellent food for all dogs!
I use Lamb & Rice due to dog allergy to chicken; which is typical. This is great dog food to give to your dog. I also recommend cycling the food you give. Great to mix with tuna, coconut oil, oatmeal, tumeric, ginger, probiotics, chlorella, carrots, and various other natural raw ingredients.. I also give a touch of garlic (on't use too much though) with any raw meats to kill any possible worms. MAKE SURE GARLIC IS NOT FROM CHINA!!! When you are told garlic is toxic for dogs, it is referencing garlic from china, which is also toxic to humans. DAn alarmingly high percentage of Chinese garlic is actually grown in untreated sewage water, likely to also contain lead, sulfites, and other harmful substances. The use of toxic pesticides in large-scale farming export businesses is often required in China during production.
After the garlic is harvested in China, standard processing includes chemical sprays to prevent sprouting and a thorough bleach bath to whiten the bulbs. By law, in China, the final step for most produce exports is to fumigate with methyl bromide, a substance that, according to the UN, is more than 60 times as dangerous as chlorine because it causes both the central nervous system and respiratory damage.
My senior dogs, 15 and 16 years old, prefer the beef to the lamb, but all six dogs like both flavors. We mix this with water and Purina Beyond Beef canned food for everyone. I like the solid ingredients and soy free aspects - no fillers.
1) My Aussie’s fir didn’t seem quite as bright and shiny as when she eats her regular food.
2) My Boston Terrier had A LOT of VERY FOUL smelling gas, which he doesn’t have on his regular food.
3) The stool from both dogs was much more bulky than normal, which leads me to believe this food has more fillers in it.
Overall, I’d consider this middle of the road dog food and I’d buy it again in a pinch, but I much prefer our regular brands.
Needless to say, I’m impressed and have my sweet May back again.
We have a 10 year old Labradoodle and a 2 year old Lab mix. Full transparency, both of them will eat pretty much anything I give them. But there is no denying the results. Both of them have tons of energy, no digestive issues and no allergies. Our old man Doodle is as active as ever and looks very healthy. When we got our younger dog, she suffered with sensitive skin and scratched a lot. Since being on Diamond Naturals, her scratching is almost non-existent.
There are several recopies and we have tried most of them. We settled on the Lamb because the dogs seem to like it best and because of out little ones skin issues. Overall we are happy and will continue feed it to our dogs.
We also noticed when the kibble changed color and size suddenly a while back and after a couple of days of digestive upset like any dog has when a food changes she got used to it and is still thriving and the picture of health. Sure I would’ve liked a little packaging alert like “new and improved formula” or whatever it is companies use these days but I haven’t noticed any changes since. Don’t let the negative review scare you off.
Not saying there are not other products that might provide the same results but the Diamond Naturals Dry Food for Adult Dog, Beef and Rice Formula is a quality product at a good price (i.e. 'Great Value') so why change?
FWIW: Our last dog (14+ yr old Golden) was allergic to Beef produces which is why we started with the Lamb & rice. We kinda chuckled at the question about "Flavor". Personally we haven't tasted it and won't. Our dog eats this dog food so fast we bought one of those 'Hunt to Eat' bowls to slow down how fast she could eat.
*Updated Review*
The brand itself is great & you really can't beat the price for a pretty damn well rounded dog food! Ingredient list doesn't send you running to Google & it's packed with things that are actually beneficial. Some "filler" type ingredients but none that are completely devoid of nutrition or are cause for upset to human or beast. My 2 Irish Wolfhounds liked it well enough (not terribly excited about it but rarely refused it all together either) & had no digestive issues with what they were allowed, by our 2 cats, to eat of it. The shady cats though, they absolutely LOVED it! One would actually climb half into the dogs elevated feeding bowls WHILE the Wolfhounds were eating! *That is whole a lot of very huge teeth, people* So naturally, that forced the dogs to sit or lay around patiently waiting for the cats to be done with their turn in eating what was not their food... **Surprisingly, no cats were harmed, at all, during meal times with this bag of food.** Seriously. It was ridiculous. Even I was ready to bite a cat more than once.
Ultimately, we went back to the Taste of the Wild (also made by Diamond) for the non confrontational Wolfhounds (+more variety, interest & better ingredients & grain free), but immediately ordered the Diamond brand cat food. Which has since brought the natural order back to the animal kingdom... Well, in our house anyways.
There are 3 main reasons why we like the Diamond Naturals Dry Food for Adult Dogs, Lamb and Rice Formula.
1. Ned Likes It – Ned’s a good dog. And, he likes to eat this stuff.
2. He Doesn’t Get Sick – Who’s a good dog? Yes, Ned’s a good dog. And, this did not make him sick at all.
3. Healthy Formula – I like that this doesn’t have soy, corn, or wheat because these are generally garbage, filler crops
We bought this dog food because Ned needs to eat, and we want him to be healthy. Ned is a 12-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He’s had some form of Diamond Naturals his whole life. My three-year-old human son and I decided to try this dog food, and we thought it tasted good. My son wanted to eat more, but we were concerned about what DHS might think. The whole bag lasted our family about a month.
The reason I am giving this four stars instead of five is that this time there was a lot of powder (see picture) in the food, like a bunch of the kibble had been pulverized by the Incredible Hulk or Thor: Fraggle Rock. It was kind of messy. This is not the quality we typically get from Diamond Naturals so I’ll assume it was an aberration. I will update this if the problem continues as we reorder.
Anyway, if you have any questions, please comment below. I’m here to help.
Recently, I noticed the packaging material changed from a paper-type bag to plastic. The shape and color of the food pellets also changed. The price stayed the same. At first, this was concerning because there was nothing online about a recipe change. I continued to feed it to my dogs with the same results. I see how this could throw some people off, but it wasn't a big deal, and my dogs still love it.
Lastly, you'll notice the price fluctuates on amazon. I almost always buy the 40lb bag at $32 shipped. Sometimes you'll see it go up to upper $40s. I usually have 1 or 2 bags in storage and rotate them through, so it's easy to keep costs low, buying at these lower prices. Enjoy!
I panicked aloud and the cashier recommended Diamond Naturals. She told me it is just as good as all of the top brands, at a much more reasonable price.
I gave it a try. Now that I know Amazon will ship it to my front door, I may never purchase outside of Amazon. I love letting it come to us rather than the other way around.
Thank you so much!!
*Update 1 month later*
Dog is chewing her paws more than ever and is no longer in a rush to eat any food. I add a small spoon of cold pressed cocunut oil and that usually grabs her interest and she'll eat half and the other half the next day or later in the day.
So just for reference I got her, a German shepherd husky mix at 4 months old and started with the puppy lamb and rice, 5 stars perfect food to start a good diet. Changed to adult breed lamb and rice especially after noticing her sensitive stomach to chicken if I was in a crunch and had to give her a little of a chicken based brand.
And now it's hard to know what to do when she let's half the food sit in the bowl all day. I may have to try something else for a month or two after telling all my friends to try this and some have, it's much better quality than a cheap store brand like the one that starts with a 'P' and ends with 'E', or has pro tagged on like that's supposed to make it any better? Cringe and beg those people to switch to this and try the lamb if they have a sensitive stomach. Her paws are red and scabby and it's hard to pin point why but they have never looked like this. When she is bored she plays fetch or chews on a bone so that would be a shame if it's a new bad bored habit.
Please comment if you've noticed a difference or if there is a recall? I'm really not sure but I do still believe this is 4 stars and I'll finish the bag over the next couple weeks and update again in November. Believe me I don't want to change brands and I'm still uncertain about ordering anther plastic bag, it might be lucky with no holes so I'll see if there are any other factors because she has no fleas and is up to date on shots and is almost 2.
**2nd update 2 weeks after**
My dog is eating more regularly and no longer chewing on her paws, I never wanted to switch and I don't think I will now. Looking forward to buying my next bag as usual and hopefully it ships well.
I happened to run across Diamond after doing another brand search among the different dog food brands out there and thought I would give it a try because of it's high rating from a trusted source. I am LITERALLY so happy I did. Not only is it SUPER affordable (mind you, junk foods at Walmart cost upwards of $25) and a 40 pound bag, but it is incredibly healthy and my dogs (who are picky and not food motivated) usually eat almost their whole serving when it is feeding time.
"Lamb meal, ground white rice, cracked pearled barley, peas, millet, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), egg product, rice bran, dried beet pulp, natural flavor, fish meal, flaxseed, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, kale, chia seed, pumpkin, blueberries, oranges, quinoa, dried kelp, coconut, spinach, carrots, papaya, yucca schidigera extract, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus reuteri, vitamin E supplement, beta carotene, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin D supplement, folic acid."
My answers to the most frequently asked questions:
Is this food grain free?
No it is not, but it is not the main ingredient.
Does this product contain sweet potatoes? My dog is allergic. Thanks!
You need to check the ingredients list, but from the list above, it does not.
why did the price go up from 36.99 to 58.79?
It fluctuates depending on demand and the fees associated with working with Amazon. Wait till it goes down to $36.
Definitely recommend as a level above well known brands that utilize corn as the main ingredient and trying to stay within budget.

Edit: I decided to give it 4 stars because the price went back down to a reasonable level again. Like I said the dog food itself is pretty close to five stars but Amazon's wild price swings (and now no free 2 days shipping it looks like) dock it a star.
Edit2: Wow now Beef is back around $32 but lamb is $37 (bad but still somewhat reasonable) but the chicken is now $44. Of course since I rotate protein sources that was what was due next. So ToTW Salmon it is. Boy my dogs probably love Amazon jacking up the prices since they get the better ToTW as result.
Costco has the Kirkland brand that Diamond actually makes and it gets the same or better rating. 35 lb bag is $27.

My bag of Diamond Naturals arrived. I shopped by price vs quality and chose it. He is nearly done with the first 40# bag. I went with the beef because it was cheapest. Its all he eats now with very few treats. I walk him at night after work and I am very pleased. Changed collars twice this month as his neck has quadrupled in size. He is a machine whom could probably out-play any dog on the planet. Im now the only one who can walk him because he is too strong for my wife and kids. His fur is thick and soft, his whiskers have tripled in length on his chin and face. He has grown from starving puppy to healthy dog in a month and a half. I certainly see no reason to change his food or reccomend any other food to anyone else. It is outstanding in every way. The ingredient list is stacked with good stuff. The food pebbles are good sized and shape. Ive seen first hand the quality of this product and support it.

Our family recently got on a healthy foods kick, and I thought "Hey, what about the dog?" So we started to look into what is actually in dog food. Bad news folks, it's mostly all some kind of filler like corn, wheat, and ground up chicken bits that don't really qualify as meat. You ever wonder why your dog is so fat? He's addicted to the carb filler in his dog food just like you are addicted to cherry pie and those great breadsticks at olive garden! I'm not going to go into a big description of how the glycemic index works, but all those carbs and lack of nutrition in his cheap dog fog make him eat more and get fat. You’ll notice the serving size on really expensive dog food is much lower because there is actually meat in there and no filler. Even everyone’s favorite Science Diet has a heck of a lot of filler in it. I recommend Diamond Naturals because this is the cheapest no filler dog food that you are likely to find. And I can tell you it has made a difference. We used to feed regular old Dog Chow and our three year old lab was fat, her coat was dull and she had occasional digestive problems. On the Diamond she is down to her ideal weight, she’s not sick anymore, and her coat is like black glass. She’s the prettiest dog you’ll ever see. If you love your dog read the label on their food. You don’t have to buy diamond, but if you do you won’t be disappointed.
I rescued him from a breeder in Louisiana and bright him home to Iowa. This guy was in very poor health, abused, malnurished, and had several intestinal parasites.
We have tried many foods over the years starting with Iams, then other big name brand such as Blue Buffalo, and Nutro to name a few. We started to see promise with a local brand called Docs Choice sold at local HyVee stores.
After lengthy research and with help from many veterinarians, we decided to chance Diamond Naturals for large breeds. I can't say enough positive about this product!
Seriously, here's just a few reasons you MUST try this product:
- Low flatulence! (If you've felt with a large dog with intestinal issues... enough said!)
- My Giant Schnauzer loves it!
- Normal and regular stools! (Never thought I'd be talking about my dogs stools, but this is a HUGE plus!)
- FREE Prime shipping! (My UPS man may hate me when you get this 40lb. bag delivered every month... **TIP: UPS men LOVE home baked goods!)
- The nutritional value is exactly what your 4-legged family members need!
WARNING... your pup may tackle you with more love than you've known after giving them this food!
Vet EVERY time we have a check up. Last check up she said she has never seen a healthier dog. I have so much faith in this product that I have asked my parents to use this food for their 14 year old yellow lab that is having a hard time walking and has been struggling with patches of dry skin all over. Within TWO weeks she was walking MUCH better and her skin was not dry, raw or bothering like it had before. My puppy loves this food and I love that it is so good for her. This food also makes her coat super soft, her teeth clean and is wonderful for her hips. We live in Colorado and hike every weekend and I love that her legs, feet and hips are healthy enough to explore the Rocky Mountains. I also love that I am a Prime member and within two days it is delivered right to my door step. :) thank you Diamond for keeping my puppy healthy and happy so she is with me for as long as possible!
- Good quality ingredients with limited grains
- AAFCO approved
- No corn, wheat, or soy
- Attractive price on Amazon
- Rat Terrier approved
Cons:
- None at the moment
Personal Experience:
I have a 27 pound Rat Terrier that enjoys the Diamond Naturals beef dog food. I have switched dog foods frequently over the years (I have always been careful to gradually ease the transition as to not upset his stomach) because he can be a rather pick eater when it comes to some dog foods. There have been dog foods I have tried in the past that are highly reviewed with excellent ingredients, but unfortunately probably didn't taste appetizing to my dog. For example, I tried Nature's Domain and some of the Science Diet brands but both were unappetizing to my dog. The cheaper dog foods seem to be appealing to my dog, likely because they use a lot of fat and other cheap ingredients that probably taste good to dogs. It reminds me of why I like cheap double cheese burgers from McDonalds...
In any case, aside from my Rat Terrier liking this food, I always check dog foods I am interested in potentially purchasing against the free websites dogfoodadvisor and dogfoodinsider to get a more accurate analysis of the ingredients. Reviews on Amazon can be quite subjective and even the most knowledgeable dog-owners generally are not the absolute best experts on all the effects of each dog food ingredient. Hence why I use those two websites. Diamond Naturals dog food scored 3.5 stars on both of dog food review sites (which is a pretty good score).
Conclusion:
Quality dog food with good ingredients (confirmed through analysis by dogfoodadvisor and dogfoodinsider) and my Rat Terrier enjoys the food. It is well-priced on Amazon for the quality and amount. I definitely recommend this dog food.
After much research, and reading the many reviews on this food, we decided to give it a try. Immediately my dogs loved it! And, to top it off, we were paying $5 less per bag, and getting 10 more pounds!! Since the transition was so easy to the knew food, I was excited to see what effects, if any, the food would have on the pups. Flash forward a month: Both dogs have much more energy, the 6 year old lab is running around playing like a puppy again. His coat is shiny, the itching is gone, and hasn't had another ear infection (it's now been several months). Our border collie also had improved energy levels, and his coat is beautiful!
I would highly recommend this food!
Pros:
Tastes great
Grain Free
High quality ingredients
No wacky additives
Great for dogs with allergies
Consistent quality
Cons:
My dog's fur is thick, but he's shedding a bit unevenly. Fur is also not very shiny, bouncy, etc. it's more long and coarse. Not sure if that's due to the food or the decrease in exercise my dog gets. We used to bike 4 miles a day but we've only been going on hikes lately.
I recommend this food to anyone who cares to give their dog a food quality ingredients, top of the shelf quality, while still saving money to spend elsewhere for our pooches.
For those who may have similar issues with these kind of food allergies with their dog; Goldie gets short, fat, baby carrots for snacks to keep teeth clean and breath fresh. The dog loves fruits (especially raspberries) and vegetables! Hope this helps someone.
Yes, the price is a bit higher. But it's not exorbitant. And since I'm seeing clear results in the form of healthier dogs, I'm willing to pay a bit more for reliable quality.
***
I'm going to supplement the bit about the price: I just visited the local Menard's, which is selling the Beef-and-Rice version of this dog food for a price almost identical to Amazon. With no hassle of needing to visit the store, Amazon is the clear winner at this price point. In contrast, the Lamb-and-Rice version sells for $38+ on Amazon, but costs an identical $31 and change at Menard's. For that version, at that price, it may be worth a trip to the store.
I was previously feeding my dogs Purina Dog Chow, I didn't realize how bad it actually was for them.
Here's a rundown on my dogs, I have a 12 year old overweight Sheltie that is stubborn and refuses to do anything besides eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. I have a 3 year old 1/4 Lab, 1/4 Golden Retriever, 1/2 Mutt mix who has the worst dog gas I've ever smelt, and his poop wasn't always solid like it should be. Then I have a 3 year old 1/2 rough German Shepherd 1/2 Lab mix who has long shaggy coarse hair (my other 2 have puppy soft hair).
After digging in to what I could do for my lab/retriever mix as his gas was to the point where we just could not handle it anymore, and it wasn't the dogs fault at all by no means. And what we could do for my chunky Sheltie. We found that the food we were feeding them was so horrible for them and decided to switch to Diamond Naturals after my research as the food has great reviews and less than $1 per pound.
In the couple weeks that I have been feeding my 3 fur babies this food their coats are noticeably softer, they actually don't eat as much as they were when we had them on Purina Dog Chow, and they are all more active. Before my 2 big dogs would play for a little bit and then get tired, they weren't acting like they should be for 3 year old dogs. Now they are more excited to get their exercise and act like a pup again. My Sheltie is already starting to lose weight. And the best part is my lab/retriever has not had any gas since we fully got them off of the dog chow, and he's having solid stool!
I highly recommend purchasing this food just for the fact that it's good for your pet. I'm trying to get my friends/family that have pets to switch to some form of food that is not full of fillers. I've learned my lesson.
I did find it at a store that's about half hour away for about the same price so if you can find it cheaper where you live go for it! But we're a minimum of half hour driving distance from any large town so the fact that Amazon has this and it's Prime is great for us!
I was originally very skeptical about this food because of the past recalls but when I did a little digging I found that many brands have had recalls too. After a lot of thinking about what's best for my best bud, I decided to give this company the benefit of the doubt. Although I'm sure this company has learned from their mistakes and most likely won't have any further issues, you can never be too safe, so make sure you sign up for recall alerts just in case.
My minimum requirements? Meat or meat meal must be the first ingredient (not byproduct or byproduct meal.) No corn, BHA, artificial coloring, etc. Basically, rated 3.5+ on dogfoodadvisor.com.
It costs me $1.08 a day to feed my 3 dogs (weighing approx. 120 lbs total, typical activity level) Diamond Naturals Beef and Rice (this product.) Other foods I looked at that met my standards cost $1.12 - $1.70 or more per day. My dogs love this food just as much as the more expensive brands we've tried (exception may be Merrick Whole Earth Farms, but in the long run I think they'd rather I spend the extra $80 a year on toys anyways) and they are just as healthy.
Diamond is a large manufacturer. They make Natural Balance brand food, which is good and what I used to use. Comparing Diamond brand vs. Diamond-made Natural Balance brand there are two main differences:
Diamond is a larger bag for much cheaper.
Natural Balance uses primarily Chicken, and then Lamb and Duck Meal. Diamond uses Beef Meal.
So both use meal, but Diamond uses more/only meal. Is there a big difference? Probably not. Meal just means it's cooked and ground up. Most sources seem to agree that meal is not necessarily any worse than plain meat. What is bad is "by product", and neither food has this. Also bad are fillers like corn, which neither food has, either.
I tried Diamond when I couldn't get Natural Balance on Prime and I needed dog food. The (substantially) lower price did not hurt. I knew it wouldn't be as good quality, but figured it would be good enough.
One dog was fine with the Diamond. The other had seriously bad "problems" on and off for about 3 weeks. In fairness, he doesn't do well with any diet changes and had been eating Natural Balance for 9 years straight. I believe the issues were not because of the Diamond, but because of a change. Meaning I could have bought the best food on earth, and I think he still would have had issues. If this changes and he develops problems again, I will assume it is the food and will update the review.
Now that both dogs are fine with this food, I will probably stick with it. It's cheap, easy to get, and the quality is good. If I have issues, I will switch back to Natural Balance, but for now I don't see a point in paying more for rather similar food.
*NO dandruff, they both had it BAD too.
*NO super loose fur, shedding is certianly down.
*SHINY, like near reflective shine. were talking that 1980's movie carwash shiny,.
*the chug especially, but both in general are much softer. the chug is dangerously soft, like a puppy.
*less scratching, allergy fur loss has stopped, im seeing hair come back, but slowly, a hair supplement like cold pressed oilive oil would help...
*processed with purified water, through reverse osmosis, like highbridge springs. no flouride zombie dogs for us....
*more energy, which could be a con i suppose.
*this stuff is cheap, 37 at my local feed store, for 40lbs. if you want it to your door, amazon delivers for 47, free shipping.
overall a 4.5 star kibble, as no kibble is perfect. add supplements (natural organic) to your dogs food to improve any thing else you want
knick knack paddy wack give a dog a bone
Pros-
quality
a bit of a healthier coat
good stool
cost to quality
seems to fill them up more
Cons-
Just expensive for dog food but i guess whats good is good
1. Highly rated
2. Cost less than $1/lb
3. My weimaraner both likes it and his stomach tolerates it (weims are known for having weak stomachs and allergies)
Using dogfoodadvisor.com, I compared the five-star brands to the pricing available online; I found no dog food that cost less than $1/lb. So I began to look at four-star brands; there were only three that I could find for less than $1/lb. and two of those weren't widely available (I'm not driving an hour for dog food). So I "discovered" Diamond Naturals Beef & Rice at a price of $31.79 for a 40 lb bag (Amazon Prime price, shipping included). That's 79¢/lb.
One criterion left: my dog had to both tolerate and like the food. Weimaraners are apparently known for having weak stomachs and allergies, so I was worried about spending $40 to find out. This has not been an issue; even better, Maxwell LOVES it. Now the only problem I have is that he might be eating too fast.
Great value, highly rated dog food. And Amazon Prime ships in two days for free. The dog and I are both happy.
